Trezor.io/Start - Hardware Wallet Setup
A clear step-by-step presentation-style guide to get your Trezor ready — secure seed, firmware, and best practices.
1. Prepare (Before you connect)
What you'll need
- A Trezor hardware device (Trezor Model T or One).
- A modern computer or mobile device and the official Trezor Suite or visit trezor.io/start.
- A private, quiet space to write your recovery seed on the included card — never digital photos or cloudy note apps.
Security tip: Keep packaging until you're fully set up and firmware verified. Only use official Trezor resources.
2. Connect & Initialize
- Open
trezor.io/start
or download Trezor Suite from the official site. - Plug your Trezor into your computer using the supplied cable.
- Follow on-screen prompts: choose Create new (for new device) or Recover device (if you already have a seed).
Choosing a PIN
Create a PIN using the device screen — this protects the device if it’s lost/stolen. Don’t write the PIN on the recovery card.
3. Back up your Recovery Seed
Write it by hand
- Your recovery seed (usually 12–24 words) is the single most important backup.
- Write each word clearly on the supplied recovery card. Make multiple physical copies and store separately (e.g., home safe + bank deposit box).
- Never store the seed as a photo, on cloud storage, or in an unencrypted digital file.
If someone obtains your seed, they control your funds. Treat it like gold.
4. Firmware & Device Authenticity
Update safely
- During setup you'll be prompted to install or update firmware — do it. Always accept signed firmware from Trezor.
- Verify the device's fingerprint/identifier shown in the Suite matches the one on the device screen before trusting it.
Only install firmware via official Trezor Suite or the official website. Avoid third-party tools for firmware updates.
5. Using Trezor Suite & Sending Funds
Day to day
- Check receiving addresses on the device screen and compare them to the Suite before sending funds.
- Always confirm the amount and destination on the device itself — the hardware display is the single trusted UI.
Best practice
Test with a small transaction first if using an address you haven't used before. Use account labeling in Suite to stay organized.
6. Recovery Drill & Maintenance
- Practice a recovery with an expendable device (if possible) to ensure your written seed is correct.
- Keep firmware and Suite up to date; watch official channels for security advisories.
If you ever suspect your seed has been exposed, move your funds to a new wallet with a freshly generated seed.
7. Troubleshooting & FAQs
Common issues
- Device not recognized: Try alternate USB ports, official cable, and reboot. Avoid hubs that can interrupt power.
- Firmware update failed: Reconnect device and retry via Suite. Contact official support if repeated failures occur.
- Lost seed: Treat funds as compromised — if possible, move funds using any partial access you still have.
Support comes from Trezor's official support center. Beware of phishing: never share your seed or device screen with anyone.
